The island of historical landmarks, business ventures, white-sandy beaches, and shopping paradises: deciding on what clothing and stuff to bring with you when visiting Cebu can get confusing as there are just too many things to see, too many places to go to, and too many activities to do. Lucky for you, we rounded up tips on what to wear and bring when visiting the island of Cebu.

  1. Cebu is generally warm, so wear natural, lightweight and tropical clothing all throughout the year. This is as basic as it gets.
  2. During the months of June to November, remember to always carry an umbrella or hat with you due to the rainy season. You might find yourself getting caught in the rain in the middle of the street with no shields for cover.
  3. December to February evenings are the times when the temperatures drop to around 18 degrees. Slightly warmer garments will do if you’re not used to cold breezes. Most tourists from cold countries barely feel this, however, and experience it only as a pleasant coolness.
  4. Touring around Cebu will require you to wear sturdy and comfortable footwear. Make sure that they also give you the support you will need with long walks around the city.
  5. Instead of bulging backpacks, carry a waist bag or sling pouch around with you so you’ll be hands-free when touring around Cebu.
  6. Never wear cut-off shorts, sleeveless shirts or skimpy clothing when visiting churches, mosques or temples. You’ll be entering a holy area and sacred place, not just a tourist attraction. This is considered impolite in the Cebuano culture. Learn how to respect such venues.
  7. Cebu is both a tourist and business destination. A loose barong, which is a native embroidered shirt, can be paired over casual pants as business or formal wear.
  8. Swimming and other water-related activities are the highlight of Cebu’s tourist attractions. Do bring a swimsuit and nice cover-ups as needed. With other water-related activates, bring appropriate swimming gear. You wouldn’t want to miss all the action along the beach shorelines.
  9. Try to avoid wearing overly skimpy clothing at the beach. It is considered inappropriate to walk to your hotel with just your swimwear on. Tourists should remember that Filipinos generally have a very reserved culture. They may reserve even their words of disapproval if you contravene their unspoken rules of modesty, but it is best to avoid getting stared at.
  10. Wear sun-block when on the beach and when touring around the city. Cebu usually has the sun all bright and shiny so it is best to apply sun-block as often as you can to protect yourself from the rays. Have your sunglasses ready with you as well so you can protect your eyes.
  11. Other than sun-block, it’s wise to apply insect repellant as well. Cebu has a hot and humid climate that is home to flies and mosquitoes. Repel them by applying as often as needed.
  12. Always have a pack of tissue paper with you since most public toilets don’t have any. If you can, try to use only comfort rooms at clean-looking establishments.
  13. Cebu transforms into a great nightlife venue when the sun goes down. Clubs around Mango Avenue and the IT Park don’t usually have strict dress codes. Cebu is a tropical paradise, after all. Wear what you think is appropriate but comfortable when you do visit party places.

The truth is, you really are free to decide on your own what to wear in Cebu. While Filipinos are a modest people, they are also very accommodating when it comes to foreigners, and it is not uncommon for a tourist to get away with what amounts to dress code murder.
